Call it ‘International Workers’ Day’, ‘Labour Day’, or ‘May Day’, May 1st is a special occasion every year. Radio Active CR 90.4 MHz marked the day with a raft of interviews that highlighted the issues that labourers and workers across a multitude of industries are currently fighting in Karnataka.
We spoke with Sowbhagya, a vociferous supporter of providing informal waste pickers in Bengaluru the benefits of recognition. Activists and MSW students Nagasimha and Satish spoke on Child Labour and Child Rights. We also featured a recorded testimony by Garment and Textile Workers Union (GATWU) President, Pratibha R.
Transgender activist and poet Chandini spoke about the need to include transgender persons within the aegis of the Labour Act. Hemant Kumar helped highlight the provisions that benefit the unorganised labour sector, while Sebastian Devaraj, President of the Domestic Workers Union, elucidated on the issues affecting domestic workers in the city.
RJ Radha hosted a special segment where city-based labour activists like Ashish Basavaraj expressed their good wishes and hopes for this Labour Day and the general labour movement.
Labour Day 2017 at Radio Active strived to highlight the latest issues concerning women’s rights, children’s rights, fighting for labour rights for sex workers and informal waste pickers, and more.
