In this episode, RJ Priyanka talks about her experience of participating in ‘Rashtriya Poshan Maah’, and about the critical topic of Nutrition. September 2018 has been dedicated as ‘Poshan Maah’ (Nutrition Month) in India to highlight how important it is to discuss the topic of nutrition in terms of women and children.
For the first two years of its life, a baby usually is supplied with good nutrition through the mother’s milk, with the first six months of the baby’s life being exclusively nourished by breast milk. It is important to take care in this period that the baby is getting enough milk and that the mother is consuming proper nutrition for her and baby’s good health. Doctors warn that in this period, no food other than mother’s milk should be encouraged.
Poshan Abhiyaan aims to address malnutrition through Convergence, Use of Technology and a Targeted approach. The main themes to be tackled include breastfeeding, adolescence and more. The Abhiyaan targets reducing instances of stunting, under-nutrition, anemia (among young children, women, and adolescent girls) and low birth weight by 2%, 2%, 3% and 2% per annum respectively. The target of the Mission is to bring down stunting among children in the age group 0-6 years from 38.4% to 25% by 2022.
