In this episode of Ganatheya Dudimegagi Navu Manushyaru, Radha, an outreach worker from Swati Manae, talks about a case study the team had handled. She workings in Soudhamani Nagara, and the case study is about violence towards women in the field of sex work.
Prema married the person she loved and came to Bengaluru with a lot of dreams. She hadn’t received any family support as it had been a love marriage. She later gave birth to a baby girl, but unfortunately, her husband gradually lost sight of his responsibilities and fell into alcoholism. They faced a situation one day in which they couldn’t even afford food for their children. Prema was guided by a friend to take up sex work to earn a living in the absence of her husband’s support.
In this line of work, an auto driver started taking a liking to Prema and she later chose to be with him, leaving her children in the care of her mother-in-law. Later, this life, too, had a tragic ending as she realised that her partner was a womaniser who kept chasing women in spite of his relationship. Fights between the couple became increasingly frequent and Swathi Manae took up the case and handled it for seven years without lodging an FIR. Today, Prema is leading a more peaceful life with her first husband and children. She is also working at Swathi Manae.
