In this episode of Mano Charchae, RJ Padma Priya is in conversation with Dr. Divya, who talks about alcohol addiction.
Identifying addiction involves five criteria:
When the person cannot control the consumption of alcohol every day at a particular time
When there is an increase in the amount of alcohol being consumed every day, from 30 ml to 60 ml to 90 ml and then more
When no matter how much one is drinking, the effect of the drinks is negligent
When even one day without a drink can lead to the person’s hands shaking, a rise in anger and the nerves not working normally
When a habit risks causing liver damage, infections in the body, and other health problems, as well as family problems
The observation of any three of the above-mentioned symptoms points to an addiction.
Following are four questions that people addicted to alcohol should ask themselves:
C – Do they feel they should cut down the consumption of alcohol, and that they should consult a doctor and seek treatment?
A – Do they get angry when questions about their drinking habit are raised?
G – Are they feeling guilty of being addicted to alcohol?
E – Has there been an eye-opener, a time they realised that consuming alcohol is useless and that they are unable to control it?
Out of these questions, if two illicit a ‘yes’, then one should look at stopping the consumption of alcohol strictly.
