In this episode of Mano Charchae, RJ Padma Priya is in conversation with Dr. Pavana about Autism in Children.
Autism is a condition that is recognised in childhood. “Early intervention is difficult as only after the baby is one-year-old can autism be detected. All over the world, 1.7 million people live with autism, meaning one out of every 120 children gets diagnosed with it.”
There is no specific cause for autism. The symptoms have a range and often include challenges in speaking, a mismatch between height and weight, lack of eye to eye contact, difficult and little interaction with others, and a deep preference for loneliness. “Today, we can spot the condition after the child has turned one, but earlier, one had to wait for 3 years before knowing.”
Living with autism can be improved to a certain extent by using therapies and treatments. Awareness and solid support systems are essential in this journey.
