Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), under the National Liveability Campaign, and in coordination with NGOs, conducted a survey on the urban poor and homeless in all its eight zones, starting November 2019. As per the survey, there are close to 4,246 homeless people in the city, among which 3,380 are male, 857 are female, and 9 belong to sexual minority groups. The survey was designed in such a way that it collected overall details like age, sex, caste, hometown, reasons for leaving home, usage of toilets, diseases, and mental health status. Currently, these persons usually reside at railway stations, bus stations, on footpaths, and at other empty plots.
The NGOs involved have suggested that BBMP set up at least 77 more shelter homes in all the zones, including separate centers for women, to address the issues. Presently, 9 rehab centers exist and can house only 250 persons.
